Candidate for the position of Hellenic Society - Secretary

Emilia Krokou

Name: Emilia Krokou

Position standing for: Secretary

Why am I standing for this position?

I have enjoyed being part of this tight-knit community during my 1st year here at King’s College London. The events held by this society have been fun and have given its members the opportunity to create lasting friendships and memories, as well as providing us with a taste of home here in London. I want to give back to the society and help make next academic year’s events equally as successful.

I believe I would be of great assistance to the society as the committee’s secretary having had relevant experience in the past. At high school, I was Head Girl and part of the school council. As part of these roles, I had to attend weekly meetings with other students from different school clubs and members of staff and discuss with them how we could achieve our goal of becoming a more environmentally friendly school. I showcased excellent time-management, organisational and communication skills by being punctual to meetings and keeping minutes to help organise our next steps as a team in event planning and goal setting. During my A-Levels, I was a student representative for the biology department. My role was to listen to my classmates about how the department could improve in different areas of teaching and then communicate that to members of staff in monthly meetings. Despite the pandemic and the lockdowns, I did not abandon my responsibilities and I carried on gathering comments from students and attending virtual meetings with faculty members to ensure the teaching delivered was suited to the rapidly changing circumstances.

I do not worry that my role as secretary will have a negative impact on my studies at university, or vice versa, as I have been able to deal with multiple responsibilities in the past and deliver results to my highest standard. I am hard working, precise, approachable, collaborative and I work well by myself or in teams. It would be an honour to be elected as secretary for the Hellenic Society.

If elected, I aim to:

  • Attend all meetings well prepared, keep minutes and ensure all committee members receive a debrief email about what was discussed during the meeting
  • Keep a record of all minutes in order to retrieve information when needed and to track our society’s progress on its goals
  • Communicate with other societies to see whether and how we can collaborate
  • Be available and answer emails as promptly as I can (within 2 working days)

I believe these aims will create an organised environment, which will in turn help the society run smoothly and efficiently.

Why you should vote for me:

I believe I have demonstrated that I have the relevant experience required to carry out the responsibilities of this role. I have had so much fun as a member of the society this year and I cannot wait for next year, when I can hopefully offer something back.
