Candidate for the position of KCL Ophthalmology Society - Secretary

Duaa Ali Faruqi

What can I bring to KCL Opthalmology Society?

  • Organise meetings for the committee
  • Maintain regular communication with other members to facilitate the society’s busy activities
  • A weekly newsletter to improve communication and share opportunities to medical students at all stages of GKT
  • Foster engagement and collaboration between the team, by taking accurate and regular minutes that are accessible to all, through platforms such as Slack and Notion

This past year, I have been involved as the Charity Week Lead and Ambassador, Women in Medicine Publicity Officer, Leaders in Health Events’ Officer and the Head of Communications at Women in Stem. Through these roles, I maintained regular and open communication with the rest of the team, seeking and analysing feedback as well as being responsible for reaching out and contacting a wider network to arrange for speakers and other opportunities. I believe that my longitudinal experience on these committees has enhanced my organisational and time-management skills, as well as my ability to work well with others. Refined skills in collaboration are vital as much of medicine is built upon team work amongst different health-care professionals, so an ability to be able to appreciate and listen to different ideas is key. My involvement as a mentor with KCLevate and KCLwim has further enhanced my communication skills. I was also responsible for writing minutes and setting up meetings. Additionally, my involvement as an interviewer with GKT, UCLAspireMed and KCLark has further developed my passion to help others to maximise learning opportunities during medical school, especially in widening participation programmes. This allowed me to recognise and provide constructive feedback on an individual basis. Being part of Team Orange, where we organise opportunities for the community such as homeless care package distributions, has reinforced my desire to help the less fortunate.
