Oliver Tate: Secretary
Hello! I’m Oli,
I’m going into my second year of BA War Studies, taking modules in Statecraft & Diplomacy, Intelligence, and International Law.
Having been part of the Diplomacy Society since the very start of my time at King’s I have had pleasure of attending events such as the Russian Embassy visit, diplomatic skills/ negotiation workshop, and the diplomacy ball! I’ve enjoyed all of them and decided it’s time for me to become more actively involved in the society by becoming its secretary!
The Secretary role requires excellent time management skills and having worked part time in the Compliance/Operations role at a supermarket, managing time was vital to ensure a good job was achieved. The job also gave me transferrable skills such as people management and customer service which I’m sure will come in use when communicating with the KCLSU. Additionally, I have volunteer experience with the Forestry Commission and have also completed an online certification by the Foreign Office on “An Introduction to British Diplomacy” which greatly enhanced my knowledge of the practical side of foreign affairs.
Despite the Secretary role being more of an administrative one, being on the committee provides a platform for new ideas to be suggested. A couple things I would like to see in the society include:
• Closer cooperation and more events between the wide range of societies with similar interests to ours such as: Politics Soc, Intelligence and Security Soc and MUN to name a few.
• Having attended to Diplomacy ball along with the diplomacy related societies from other universities in London it would be great to see more interaction with these groups as it is good for networking and meeting even more people with similar interests.
As Secretary I will ensure meetings run smoothly so that other ideas will be heard and then assist with implementing them.
Thank you for taking the time to read my manifesto and I hope to see you at the next Diplomacy Society Event!
