Why Me?

Having served in the committee for the past season, I have made the conscious effort to try and speak to every single member of the Club. It is my belief that the committee should be accessible to every member at any given moment. Despite my less-than-impressive memory, I'd like to think I have gotten to know each member better over the course of this year.

My role as Competition Secretary has meant that I have built good working relationships with different parties. These include Fitzroy Lodge, London Boxing officials and medical professionals, Greenwood Theatre, as well as other London University ABCs (Imperial College London, UCL, and Queen Mary UoL).

From scheduling the order of the bouts, to changing room allocations, to planning the production… organising the KCLABC Open Boxing Show (alongside our President Shaheen and fellow committee members) has been a fruitful learning experience. I firmly believe this year has laid a solid foundation on which the Club and I can build on.

It is imperative that there are equal opportunities for everybody, regardless of one’s level of boxing experience. Having run a beginners’ boxing session in collaboration with Women in Physics Society, I appreciate and value the importance of fair representation and inclusivity. By virtue of being a relatively small sports club at KCL, our Club has significant potential to become a tight-knit community, and more importantly, one that welcomes new-comers, regardless of background, gender, or ethnicity.

It is only natural to ask yourself, ‘Why on earth should I vote for Charles?'

The answer is straightforward- because you will get 100% effort from me, and not an ounce less.

My Goals:

1)    Inclusivity: Each person should be treated equally and with open arms at KCL ABC, regardless of background, gender, or ethnicity. Whether you are here for a taster session, or a veteran of the club… it is non-negotiable that every member should feel comfortable and welcomed at all times.

One big element of inclusivity is accessibility, and this is something that this club has to improve on. I will ensure this is reflected from top down.

Committee members, especially Women’s and Men’s Captain, will personally introduce themselves to new members at their taster session. This encourages them to build a relationship with the committee right from the beginning, and open a means of communication. The aim is for members to know exactly who to talk to, should they feel the need to do so.

Messages on the WhatsApp chat and social media platforms will be monitored regularly, with the goal of replying to every message within 1 hour of receiving it. If all else fails, I would be happy to answer any queries or be contacted personally.

Each member is equally valued at KCL ABC, and it starts with a fundamental culture change.

2)    Community: The boxing gym can seem a daunting place at first, but at Fitzroy Lodge we are fortunate to have a wonderful community spirit. Keeping the beginners/advanced class split, each member can progress at their own pace, and train with others at a similar level of experience.

I aim to also run dedicated classes for female members, as well as small-group beginners’ sessions, where more experienced boxers can coach and get to know newcomers in a comfortable setting.

Lastly, I aim to cultivate a community spirit where all members support each other in their goals, whether it’s getting mentally and physically fit, or having your debut bout as an amateur boxer for KCL ABC. Feedback from this year suggests that more socials would encourage members to get to know each other better, and this is exactly my plan. COVID- permitting, the aim is for the club to have monthly socials, and ideas include mini golf, quiz nights, team meals, and sports nights.

3)    Opportunity: Following the success of this year’s show, the bar will be set high: I aim to deliver 3 KCL ABC Shows in the 2022-2023 academic year. With a close relationship with Fitzroy Lodge ABC, as well as contacts at numerous London universities’ ABCs and Durham University ABC, my goal is to provide our boxers with the opportunity to box competitively in front of their friends and family, at the Lions Den of London University Boxing, Greenwood Theatre.

My vision is to establish ourselves as a reliable and reputable Amateur Boxing Club, and eventually become the most competitive University ABC within London. We are gifted with talented and dedicated boxers, and they deserve to be seen on a wider scale, in front of the eyes of KCL students and beyond.
