Hey all! My name is Jisu Kim and I’m a Philosophy, Religion & Ethics student running to be your next president.

ABACUS has played a humongous part of my uni life; I’ve met some amazing people, including past and present committee members, and had some of my best moments here. Whether it’s the drunken moments from clubbing, to the endless stacks of dimsum at Dumpling’s Legend - ABACUS has provided so much joy for me and my friends.

ABACUS truly makes you feel like you belong somewhere, and that you’re part of a large yet tight knit community. The society enabled me to embrace both my Korean and British identities and also gave me a home away from home. As a more senior member of ABACUS, I want to give back to this amazing society by maintaining what makes it great, while also introducing some new ideas that I think will be of benefit to everyone.

So, why should I be your next president?

  • During the 2021-22 period, I was the social secretary for the KCL Philosophy Society

    • Undertook several responsibilities: planning + promoting events, managing our social media accounts, organising the society’s Google Drive

    • Helped to organise the Classics x Philosophy Winter Ball, giving me experience planning larger scale events

    • Familiar with liasing with the KCLSU and using the eXpense 365 system

  • I manage a family-owned restaurant called Seoul Bakery (a sponsor of ABACUS)

    • Requires me to micro-manage any new employees, or whenever current employees are having difficulties adjusting to changes

    • Oversee the general running of the shop, both front of house and at the back - making sure that everyone is doing their job

  • I am a promoter for PlayKrown, a frequent collaborator with ABACUS

    • We won’t have to rebuild a relationship with PK, since I already have ties with them

    • KCL ABACUS will be able to get more tickets for ABACUS x PK events

    • Continue our KCL exclusive Paint The Town Red event

The current committee has done an amazing job this year, transitioning ABACUS from the online era back to real life. If I was to become your new president, these are some of the things that I would do:

  • Introduce more events during freshers month

    • This provides freshers with more opportunities to attend ABACUS events as I noticed that demand was very high earlier on in the year

    • Give priority to those who hadn’t attended an event yet (for the first month)

  • Use QR codes for payment transfers

    • To prevent sensitive information from being circulated around without our knowledge

  • Introduce team building events for the committee twice annually to improve internal relations

    • This will help the society as a whole - a stronger committee will mean more efficient planning for events

Thank you all for reading my manifesto and I look forward to seeing everyone at the AGM!
