Ruth HAWES

My name is Ruth, and I am a 2nd Year Adult Nursing student. I am applying for the position of treasurer for KCL Book Club this coming academic year. Over the course of the past two years, I have been a very active member of KCL Book Club, as to me books are a way of connecting us and giving us something to share. Although I have not been with many other societies, I played a big part in the formation of the KCL Neurodiversity and Mental Health Society and am now one of the ambassadors for that society. From this experience I have gained a wealth of knowledge about how a society runs and the importance of teamwork to make a society run smoothly.

Being a part of the Book Club over the past few years has been an amazing experience. I have not only expanded my reading collection but have connected with so many people. :) Over the next year I would love to continue to uphold the legacy of this Book Club by providing more tea talks, picnics and exploring London especially the bookish spots. As treasurer it would be my role to make sure these all run smoothly, are booked well in advance and are well planned. And we cannot forget the provisions of snacks, cakes, drinks to make all these events work (I have a very sweet tooth so there will be lots of snacks). :)

I’m going to finish with a quote from Pride and Prejudice “How pleasant it is to spend an evening in this way! I declare after all there is no enjoyment like reading. How much sooner one tires of anything than a book! When I have a house of my own, I shall be miserable without an excellent library.”

Finally let me say books are a part of life but also a part of society. We at KCL Book Club are a family of booklovers, readers and even people who have never read a book before. Let’s continue to share the power of reading and the joy of books.
