The Prophet, upon him be peace, said: “Give charity without delay, for it stands in the way of calamity.” (Al-Tirmidhi)
Hiya! My name is Aalia Qureshi and I’m in my second year of Medicine. I am applying for the general committee for Afghan Welfare Society. I would love to continue my work with this society as I hold the cause close to heart and enjoy contributing to the hard work, passion and dedication that all members put in to all of our events, be they educational, well-being related or cultural. If elected I would aim to continue with AWS’s reputable charity schemes and try to increase the collaboration between different Afghan societies across the UK to maximise our fundraising efforts. There are many incredible independent Afghan businesses and charities operating around us (some by our own students!) and being able to support and multiply their efforts with the help of AWS would be an amazing step in diversifying our talent landscape and creating an environment where everyone feels welcome to discuss and contribute their skills!
In addition to this, I would aim to hold fundraising events such as skydiving, hikes and overseas activities throughout the entire year (at least once every 2 months) to maximise our reach as much as possible and potentially collaborate with overseas Afghan Societies. As well as this, I would propose an AWS blog in which all committee members (and anyone interested) can write about anything Afghan-related, whether that be culture, food, history or current affairs. I believe these proposals (and the many more I have in mind!) will have a positive impact on an already-amazing society by increasing the people who can access our events as well as maximising the opportunities to immerse our followers in the rich Afghan culture.
Over the past year, I have taken part in various charity events such as Charity Week and other smaller schemes and fundraising activities such as bake sales, events planning etc. . Having taken a leading role in many of these, I have developed vital skills for being a successful part of the general committee, such as being able to problem solve and think flexibly when things don’t go to plan, being able to delegate effectively according to people’s strengths, being organised and punctual with deadlines as well as thinking outside the box to come up with fresh new ideas! I am also confident and able to approach new charities and organisations with the aim of working together for mutual benefit. I absolutely love talking to new people at events and ensuring everyone feels comfortable whether they are there for the first time or regulars at our events. Finally, I believe having a passion and love for different cultures is an immensely crucial part of being successful at these roles and I am sure that my love for languages, culture and diversity will enable me to stay motivated and inspired to create new ideas while prioritising it alongside academic demands.
For the above reasons, I would really appreciate if you could take the time to vote for me as I believe I would be able to carry out this role to the best of my abilities and use it as a platform to enable AWS to excel in their charitable efforts! Thank you so much for reading my manifesto and feel free to contact me at email@example.com
