NOT SURE WHICH SPECIALTY IS FOR YOU? LET US HELP.

KCL CSS is the first and only society to offer convenient accessibility to a wide variety of specialties, catering to both medical and dental students alike.

CLINICAL SPECIALTIES EVENINGS

Our clinical specialties events are completely free, monthly, medical and dental events covering a wide range of specialties and career pathways. Our engaging clinician speakers will aim to cover the challenges and rewards unique to each specialty, talk about their personal experiences and struggles, and give advice on progressing in the field.

Aiming for a non-biased approach, clinicians will NOT be selling their specialty to you. We aim to give KCL students a realistic image of what it is like in different specialties (and subspecialties) at different stages of the career, how it affects work-life balance etc.

We'll be hosting events on all specialties (especially those underrepresented at KCL) in a systematic and structured fashion throughout the year.

Established in 2018, over the past two years we have showcased well over 40 specialties over the course of almost 30 events. Our events are attended by students undecided on a specialty as well as those already set on a specific career path.

YOUNG ACADEMICS

We also run the Young Academics Scheme, an innovative research pairing scheme, which sources and advertises research projects open to involving students across different disciplines, and pairs motivated students with dedicated supervisors.

Through this scheme some students have gained the opportunity to become published authors or present their work at national conferences. To date, we have paired over 100 students with research supervisors in 84 projects.

You can find out more about the scheme here: https://www.youngacademics.co.uk/

The highlight of our year is the Young Academics Conference, which is centred around promoting academic medicine and inspiring students to take part in clinical research, whilst also providing students who have taken part in the Young Academics research pairing scheme the opportunity to present their findings.

AFP MENTORSHIP SCHEME

This year we are continuing our new Academics Founation Programme mentorship scheme and have opened it up to all UK medical schools to now be a national scheme. We will be kicking off with our zoom seminar series "So you're thinking about AFP: a three-part series" with successful AFP offer holders and foundation doctors guiding you through the processo of understanding the AFP programme, the application process and the interview stations. Following this we shall be offering society members the opportunity to be paired with a dedicated AFP mentor for small group sessions throughout the Autumn term, focussing on individualised help and interview preparation and practice.

WHAT’S THE £3 MEMBERSHIP FOR?

To enhance the portfolios of students interested in these specialties, our research coordinators find available research projects (on the same specialty topic) for each of our specialties events. Project titles and further details on how to apply are announced via Facebook/Instagram so make sure to follow us on social media!

To be eligibile to apply for these competitive project allocations you must become a member of this society (by paying £3 standard membership fee). The projects offered will be specifically chosen to provide the opportunity for you to present a poster/oral presentation and/or publish your work! This will inevitably make you a more competitive applicant for any career you choose to pursue, and even help you get the clinical training posts you desire.

The membership will also give you a discounted rate to our Young Academics Conference, and enable you to take part in our new for 2021 Academic Foundation Programme application and interview mentorship scheme.
