From King's Student to Mayor at 23: Celebrating Alumnus Tushar Kumar's Incredible Achievement
A recent King's College London graduate has made history by becoming one of the youngest mayors in the UK.

At just 23 years old, Tushar Kumar, a King's alumnus who studied BSc Politics, has been elected Mayor of Elstree & Borehamwood. According to national media reports, he is currently the youngest serving mayor in the UK and the youngest ever Indian-origin mayor in the country.
Tushar's achievement is impressive in its own right, but it's also a reminder of what students and recent graduates can achieve when they get involved in the causes and communities they care about.
The story was brought to KCLSU's attention by Student Trustee Priyanshu Kumar, who felt Tushar's achievement was an important milestone to celebrate.
"Achievements of this scale from recent King's alumni are rare, and recognising them reflects the kind of ambition, leadership and impact KCLSU encourages across our student community. It's important that students can see examples like Tushar's and know that leadership and public service are accessible regardless of age or background."
Making a difference while still at university
Tushar's journey into public service began while he was studying at King's. Alongside his degree, he became actively involved in local government and was elected as a councillor at an age when many students are still deciding what career path to pursue.
Since then, he’s continued to build on that experience, taking on greater responsibility in local government before being elected mayor in 2026.
His story highlights something we see across the King's community every day: students using their time at university not only to learn, but to create meaningful change in the world around them.
Building confidence through King's
Tushar has previously spoken about the role King's played in helping him develop as a leader.
He credited the King's Civic Leadership Academy with helping him build confidence and strengthen his public speaking skills, while his involvement with the University Officers' Training Corps also helped shape his leadership journey.
These experiences gave him opportunities to develop the skills, confidence and sense of purpose that have supported his path into public service.
Inspiring the next generation of leaders
At a time when student leadership, civic engagement and community action are more important than ever, Tushar's achievement sends a powerful message: you don't have to wait until later in life to make a difference!
Whether that's representing fellow students, volunteering in the local community, leading a society, running a campaign or pursuing public office, meaningful change can start while you're still at university.
Tushar's story is a reminder that leadership is not defined by age, experience or background. It's about stepping forward, getting involved and being willing to make a positive impact.
Congratulations, Tushar!
Everyone at KCLSU would like to congratulate Tushar Kumar on this amazing achievement.
We’re proud to celebrate his success and look forward to seeing the positive impact he continues to make in his community and beyond.
His journey from King's student to mayor is an inspiring example of what can happen when students back themselves, seize opportunities and take their first steps into leadership!
