Starting out at university this year may seem more daunting than ever. Here at KCLSU we have around 400 groups for you to choose from and make yourself at home in! The Welcome Fair (happening digitally on the 24th, 25th and 26th of September) is a great time to explore what societies are getting up to in the coming year, as well as to get a feel for what they’re about. Just before Welcome Week starts, here’s a short guide to get you thinking about what societies you’d like to join this year!

Societies and groups range from sports clubs, cultural societies and even societies by hobby. Have a niche interest or hobby? With almost 40,000 students attending each year, it’s more than likely that you’ll find people who share it at King’s.

Cultural Societies

If you’re feeling a bit homesick at the start of the year, or just want to get stuck in and learn about new cultures, why not consider joining one of our cultural societies? We have societies run by students from all over the world, like the African and Caribbean, India, and European societies – as well as the Association of British and Chinese University Students – to name only a few!

Cultural societies are a great chance to join a community that is like a home away from home, or even to find out more about a culture that already interests you from the people who know it best. Events can range from whacky socials like bowling and pub-crawls, to educational lecture series from some of the best minds in the country!

Societies by Hobby

Maybe you’re looking to make friends with fellow students that share your passion. Societies have you covered there too, with groups ranging from Photography, to Musical Theatre, and Harry Potter Society. Here you can expect events like movie marathons, curated workshops, and even outings exploring London (and beyond) through the lens of your shared hobby! This is another great way to meet people who aren’t necessarily in your halls or on your course, perhaps even less daunting as you know you will definitely already have something in common!

Societies by Cause

Speaking of something in common... there are many societies at King’s that are cause-focused. Often working with charities, non-profits, or even networks of students across the UK, these groups aim to raise awareness and take action on causes close to their hearts. These include: Friends of Médecins Sans Frontières, ThinkMental Society, and Women for Women International Society. Activities throughout the year by these societies are wide ranging, often focusing on fundraising or campaigning. This is why joining a cause-focused society is also great for those looking to do charity work after university.

Sports Clubs

Whether you’re looking to play your favourite sport from secondary school, play against UCL in our famous Varsity Tournament, or just let off some steam in between lectures, sports societies are abound at King’s! All your favourite sports are here: Football, Rugby, Netball, Baseball, Water Polo... and much more! There may be some sports that you have never heard of like Ultimate Frisbee (yes, it’s a thing!) and Kabaddi. Even if you’re not into competitive playing, these societies can offer you a casual way to continue a sport you’re passionate about, or simply exercise with fellow students in your community!

Overall, societies are at the heart of the King’s experience. They’re a great way to make friends, explore your interests old and new, and to make the most out of your time at university! We look forward to seeing you at our Digital Welcome Fair where you can find out more about what all our societies and clubs have to offer you!
