When living in a city as busy as London, you’ll quickly learn that public parks can be some of the most relaxing places to spend your free time. Whether you’re having a picnic, sitting down to read and listen to music, or stopping by for a quick lunch, parks always offer a serene little corner of the world. Luckily, with almost 3000 parks sprinkled around London, you are spoilt for choice even within the SE5 area alone.
Ruskin Park | 5-minute walk
Located just next to King’s College Hospital is the historical Ruskin park, a spacious park with both quiet spaces to relax and plenty of sights to explore. Take a walk around the ornamental pond or visit the portico shelter, a remaining piece of a historical eighteenth-century villa. Friends of Ruskin Park is strong community that keeps Ruskin Park lively and energetic. They host live concerts at the park’s bandstand every fortnight from July to October, perfect way to spend an autumnal evening after your classes.
Myatt’s Fields | 13-minute walk
Myatt’s Fields is a charming smaller park in Camberwell, but with plenty of spaces to relax. It also has tennis courts available to book if you fancy a quick game with friends. A highlight is the Little Cat Café, which is family run and uses food sourced directly from the park’s greenhouse.
Burgess Park | 20-minute walk, 12-minute bus
One of the biggest parks in London, spanning from Camberwell all the way to Bermondsey. It boasts a substantial list of sports facilities from its famous BMX track, cricket pitch, basketball court and tennis courts. There is even a lake that allows you to fish! While its size may mean that it can get lively, there are plenty of private nooks all around to discover.
St. Francis Park | 15-minute walk
A small park in a more secluded area, making it the ideal place for some quiet solo time. You could take a walk around the trail or perch near the dog park for some wholesome people-watching.
Parks are not only a fantastic way to unwind but many are also historical sites, making it a charming way to explore and experience London’s heritage. So maybe during your next study break, swap the lively bustle of Denmark Hill for some time at the park!
