We can’t wait for the KCLSU Film Festival this year! Featuring special guest speakers, film screenings and socials, this week is your chance to celebrate and learn more about the film industry. For all the film lovers, here’s a collection of some of the best independent cinemas in London.
1. BFI Southbank
One of the best known independent cinemas, the British Film Institute on Southbank shows thousands of films every year and hosts the annual BFI London Film Festival. They show films both new and old every day of the week across their four screens, and also have a bar and restaurant with views of the Thames. They have cheap deals and opportunities for people aged 16-25, working to make film accessible for all. Find out more about their discounts here.
2. Prince Charles Cinema
In the heart of the West End, the Prince Charles Cinema shows a range of new releases and cult classics. They regularly hold sing-a-long screenings for classics like The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Grease. Members can get discounted tickets as cheap as £1.
Located just off Rye Lane, Peckhamplex boasts a colourful exterior and £4.99 tickets to blockbusters and independent films every day. The cinema is right by Peckham Levels, which is a great spot to grab dinner or a drink.
4. Backyard Cinema
Where else could you settle into a giant beanbag with a cocktail and watch the latest films? Backyard Cinema creates immersive cinema experiences around London venues and at their permanent site in Wandsworth. They also serve fresh pizzas, sandwiches, and signature drinks.
5. Rio Cinema
The Rio Cinema in Dalston has been around for over 100 years. The building is Grade II listed and decorated in a distinctive art deco style. It is run as a charity with the community in mind, and hosts exhibitions, film festivals, and screenings of the latest blockbuster films.
