As part of the KCLSU Student Voice Review, we’re changing how Academic Associations and Liberation Networks work at KCLSU to make it simpler, more accessible and better suited to how students get involved.
Here’s what you need to know.
🎓 Academic Associations 🎓
Your Academic Association isn’t disappearing.
Academic Associations will no longer be a separate category in KCLSU’s by-laws. Instead, they’ll become part of our wider student groups structure.
For students, this means your Academic Association will continue to run as normal, while your committee will have access to:
- More KCLSU funding opportunities 💰
- Clearer guidance on things like finance, risk assessments and speakers 📋
- Direct support from our Student Groups team 🤝
- More opportunities to take part in KCLSU Awards and accreditation schemes 🏆
Your Academic Association will also continue to work with your Faculty as it does now.

🧡 Liberation Networks 🧡
We’re changing how liberation work is organised at KCLSU.
From 1 August 2026, Liberation Networks are no longer formal KCLSU structures.
This doesn’t mean KCLSU is stepping away from liberation work. Instead, we’re moving towards a more flexible and sustainable approach that reflects the different ways students get involved – through campaigns, societies, communities and elected officers.
The aim is to make it easier for students to celebrate their histories, build communities, campaign on issues that matter to them and reach wider audiences with their stories.
We’ll be developing this approach with students over the coming months, including how we support:
- Liberation-focused campaigning and organising 📣
- Community-building and collaboration between student groups 🤝
- Liberation History Months and other liberation-focused activity 🧡
- Students to shape liberation priorities and have their voices heard 🗣️
We’re also working with students to make sure liberation communities continue to have opportunities to be heard, represented and involved in shaping KCLSU’s work.
We know that many students have put significant time and energy into Liberation Networks, and their experience will be important as we develop what comes next.

Our Student Groups team will be working with students and group members over the coming months to put these changes into practice and make sure the new approach works.
