KCLSU Response to Ersin Tatar Event

We understand from the university that they accepted an invitation from the Turkish Embassy, to host a private meeting with Ersin Tatar, which we understand has caused some concerns among members of our student community. We want to clarify that this event has been arranged between the Turkish Embassy and the university, for sponsored Turkish students at King’s to attend. This is not a KCLSU organised event. We are aware that due to a misunderstanding between the university and the KCL Turkish Society, the private event was also promoted to King’s students via social media. KCLSU President, Mohd Yasir Khan, helped to avoid any further concern or confusion by working with the KCL Turkish Society and the university to correct the error and remove the post. The university have explained to us that they regularly receive requests from governments (or partner institutions) to meet with their sponsored students and other privately funded students and that they often grant these requests and use university spaces. We are aware that some of our members may not agree with this event and may want to protest and KCLSU advocates for peaceful protest and freedom of expression. As your Student Officers, we want to hear your views and receive any feedback on any concerns or issues you want us to make your voice heard on. Feel free to email us at studentofficers@kclsu.org.
