Attend Postgraduate-Specific Events at Welcome Week
Welcome Week is the perfect time to make new friends before you get thrown into the busy postgraduate lifestyle. While you will make connections further down the road, Welcome Week is when everyone is most eager to reach out to new people and make spontaneous plans. Societies Aren’t Just for Undergraduates!
There is a common misconception that student groups and sports clubs are undergraduates-only. However, each year plenty of postgraduates find a sense of community amongst these societies. In more casual settings like a tennis match or a Bollywood dance class, you’ll find that factors like age and level of study often don't matter.
King’s Doctoral Student Association
KDSA is the academic association specifically for Postgraduate Research students. If you are coming to King’s as a PhD student, you are automatically a member of KDSA, which represents doctoral students within various committees and make sure your voice is heard at the highest level. KDSA also hosts social, academic and career events throughout the year. From hikes to debates, engaging with KDSA is the perfect place to meet fellow researchers.
Get Involved Within Your Faculty and Department
Postgraduate studies are incredibly busy and focused, so finding time to socialise is precious. A good way to balance your academic and social life is to spend your study sessions in your department-dedicated area on campus. You’re likely to meet someone doing the same program as you or someone to chat about your research with, all whilst getting some work done.
Your faculty will also organize host of postgraduate tailored events throughout the year. Keep up to date with your faculty’s newsletter and follow their social media pages, and you’re bound to find both networking opportunities and casual meet ups!
