Student campaigns that have made real change

Did you know that as a student at King’s you are a part of a movement that can change the course of history?

Every single student at King’s is automatically a member of KCLSU, a place for students to organise collectively around their interests and come together to call for change. The student movement has been a driving force behind some of history’s major social and political shifts… all led by and for students!

Throughout history, many student-led campaigns have led to real societal change. A striking example can be found in America with the 1960 Greensboro sit-ins. In North Carolina, at a time where segregation was still rampant, four students of the North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University led a sit-in in the F.W. Woolworth department store to protest against their policy of racial discrimination. The scope of this action far exceeded this store chain, as the Greensboro sit-ins effectively started nationwide sit-ins and protest against segregation in America, as well as serving as a foundation for the creation of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC).

There are more examples of how students have driven social change:

While these may seem like big ambitious actions, and they have certainly made a big difference in people’s lives, they all started with a few passionate people coming together to dream for something better and plan to make it happen.
