KCLSU is a union and a collective, where students can make new friends and experience new opportunities, while creating lasting and impactful change.

Every King's student is automatically a member of KCLSU and members are at the heart of the democratic process and decision-making. The first step to representation at KCLSU is knowing that your vote shapes the union as you want it. It is students who vote for their representatives, be it at the Union or University level.

These representatives shape the decisions made at the highest level, advocate for students, lead their communities, and lend their voices in crucial spaces.

Let’s break it down:

Full-Time Officers (Vice Presidents/Presidents of KCLSU)

Elected student officers wear several hats, and as such take a year out of their studies or complete their tenure after graduation. These hats are trustee, representative, KCLSU staff member, and campaigner. Representing all of the student body, they support change through their campaigns and manifesto priorities. They oversee the general direction of KCLSU and as such are also present in the highest decision-making committees at King’s to ensure that student voice is heard.

Student Trustees

As a charity, KCLSU is led by a board of trustees of which 10 are students. These 10 trustees are elected by the student body; six are the Officer team and four are student trustees. This means that at the highest level, student voice is at the centre of the decision-making process. Student Trustees are elected at the same point as student officers during KCLSU Elections in Term 2, but this is a voluntary position and can be done alongside studying. Student Trustees sit on KCLSU’s board and sub-committees and are company directors. They ensure the strategic direction and impact of the Union aligns with the values and priorities of the student body.

Other Representatives

In addition to this, there are other representatives, elected by students who shape different aspects of the Union and the university.

• Academic Reps: Student reps are elected at a departmental or faculty level and are responsible for feedback gathering and using students’ opinions to help shape what is happening on a departmental or faculty level. Student reps work closely with both academic staff, KCLSU, and students and bring forward an agenda and issues, feedback, or ideas to the Student Staff Liaison Committee.
• Student Group Committees: Elected by their respective members, committee members lead their societies or clubs. With training from KCLSU, they host a wide range of impressive events and competitions. Whilst not directly involved in representation, they are an important aspect of the democratic process and lead change within their communities by campaigning and being the first point of contact for many students at King’s.
