Update on VP Education (Health)

UPDATE: Thursday 21 May 2026 - 17:28PM

Based on information currently available to us, we understand there is reason to believe that Hasnain has now been transferred to Turkey and is receiving consular support.

We are happy to share this update and are encouraged by indications that Hasnain is safe. At this stage, however, we have not received confirmation regarding onward travel arrangements or timing for any return to the UK.

Our immediate focus remains on Hasnain’s welfare and wellbeing. We will continue to monitor the situation appropriately and consider any support that may be available to Hasnain as a colleague once further information becomes available.

We will continue to engage through appropriate channels and provide further updates where appropriate.

UPDATE: Thursday 21 May 2026 - 12:08PM

Since earlier this week, we have been in discussions with NUS and King’s regarding appropriate welfare and consular support routes relating to Hasnain’s situation.

We have asked both organisations to assist in facilitating engagement with the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) to better understand any relevant welfare, safeguarding and consular processes available.

KCLSU has also initiated formal contact with the FCDO directly.

We will continue to provide updates where appropriate as further information becomes available.

ORIGINALLY POSTED: Monday 18 May 2026

We are aware that a member of our Sabbatical Officer team - Hasnain Jafer, Vice President Education (Health) - has elected to join the Global Sumud Flotilla in his personal capacity.

We now believe that Hasnain has been detained in international waters.

We recognise that many members of our community will share our concerns for his welfare and safety, and addressing these concerns remains our top priority. We are engaging with others with a view to ascertaining what we might do to facilitate his safe return.

We note that any activity undertaken by KCLSU, a registered charity, must remain consistent with our charitable objectives, governance responsibilities, and trustees’ duties. This activity has not been organised, authorised, or funded by KCLSU.
