Elections FAQs

Running for election is simple – you just need to provide us with some basic info before 10 am on Monday 21st February, by visiting the Elections page.

We use the single transferable vote system which mean when students cast their vote they can order candidates in order of preference. You can watch this handy video to help explain how this works and translates into the vote count.

If you think someone would be great, the best thing to do is talk to them! Tell them that you admire them and think they should stand, it’s a huge compliment.

There is no magic formula to campaigning: it’s all about communicating your message in a way that suits you. This can be done in a number of digital ways: talking to people you know online or using social media. Having a few friends to help you out and cover more ground as a team is always a good idea, they can also campign to their friends on your behalf. Don’t feel like you have to do certain things just because you see other people doing them – focus on your strengths and what you’re comfortable with.

You’ll be employed by KCLSU from 1 July 2022 to 31 July 2023. The Student Officer role is a full-time job, you are required to work an average of 35 hours per week. We can discuss arrangements for you to work these flexibly, if you have parent or caring responsibilities or access needs, for example.

Due to the pandemic, you may be required to work from home depending on government guidelines and lockdown rules. However the Student Officer roles are usually office based. 

Any registered student should be able to take a year-long interruption from their course. If you are a part-time or Master’s student then the best thing may be to take an interruption and complete your dissertation after you’ve finished. We recommend that you talk to your school about interrupting your studies and/or research, as they’ll be best placed to discuss your situation.

Yes you can! You’ll be able to work as a Student Officer under a Tier 4 visa, and KCLSU will help you cover the costs. We often have international students on our Student Officer team.

You don’t need any prior experience to become a Student Officer – just the experience of being a student at King’s. We’ll provide you with all the training and support you will need.

This includes:

• NUS Lead and Change conference.
• Other NUS conferences that are relevant to your role (e.g. Liberation).
• Full Student Officer induction programme over the summer.
• KCLSU Learning and Development programme.
