Hannah FOSTER

Fostered the freshers, now the club

My time at KCLBC has been imperative in my development as a person, I’ve learnt new skills, met friends for life and most importantly learnt to believe in myself. That’s why I am committed and motivated in leading this club and being club captain next year.

My first point of action will be to liaise directly with the members of the club about the issues we currently face, I will then organise them into a list of importance and tackle them one by one.

I will work with the boatswain throughout the year to ensure our boats are in good condition year round and any damages are swiftly taken care of, I also have a plan for boats that no longer work or are not financially feasible to fix - scrap them for parts for money for other repairs or organise a boat smash where alumni can take a piece of the boat home.

I will also liaise with our experienced coaches about what we can do to make our club as successful as possible.

I am aiming to create an incident log/events log where everyone can report problems in the club that they feel need addressing, regarding boats, socials or anything of the sort. I am committed to creating a friendly and warm environment in this club where people are not afraid to speak up if they feel as though something is wrong and I am open to everyone’s feedback on my leadership.

I will make myself available as much as I can to discuss events with club members, I am trying to timetable off one day a week where I can either be physically at the boathouse all day or arrange meetings that need to happen - of course still replying to emails, text messages and serious incidents the same day.

I would also like to create a weekly newsletter for the club to keep any alumni and/or family and friends up to date on our achievements.

In preparation for this role I have already started speaking to current members of the club about how they’d like to see the club ran in the next year and have started to consider their ideas as after all we are all a team and everyone’s voice deserves input. I have also spoken to the presidents of other clubs so I’m prepared for the workload/issues that may crop up.

A few current issues that I’ve noticed myself are: retaining members, lack of coxes for next year and the lack of knowledge around repairing boats. To combat these I will first arrange for the boatswain to schedule their repair sessions around outing times and have these be open to anyone that wishes to learn about how to fix boats - in addition if anyone breaks something that can be fixed in house, they will fix it alongside the boatswain. In regards to the coxes issue- I will make numerous social media posts advertising coxing as a way to be involved in sport at a more mental level rather than physical to attract those who want a fun and social way into sport. In order to retain members I will try to arrange more OTW novice sessions, advertise a new freshers land training plan and start that as soon as possible for those who choose rowing an a fitness option and regularly check in with each squads development in order to quickly deal with any issues people may have.
