Candidate for the position of [deleted] Medical Students' Society (MSA) - Peer Assisted Learning Officer

Piri Kohilathas

Over the past year, I have been considering to apply for MSA PAL officer. The reason for this is that I have spent the past two years being a PALS tutor, and during this time, I had the opportunity to mentor first year and second year students. This has enabled me to cultivate relationships with other students, and I have become a port of call for my previous and current PALS tutees in terms of informal advice regarding medicine. I have also been on the receiving side of this programme as a tutee, allowing me to appreciate the benefit of the PALS programme, as I had not only received useful high-yield sessions in preparation for my exams, but I was also able to ask them advice on portfolio sign-offs and placement. Having been on both ends of the PALS programme, I have been able to experience the positive impact it provides for medical students, and I would love to organise and facilitate this as a Peer Assisted Learning officer.

For the past two years, I have also been the MSA representative for the current Year 3 students at GSTT, and it has been rewarding to work with the MSA and the faculty to bring students' concerns to light, and aid change in our medical education to make it more student-oriented. This experience has equipped me to grow as a more confident individual by voicing my thoughts and opinions, a quality that I hope to bring to the table as a Peer Assisted Learning officer.

I have been the Secretary of KCL Gaana Society for two years, and it was a novel society when I had joined the committee. This was quite challenging at the beginning, as we did not know what kind of role Gaana Society would be take in the KCL community. However, over the two years, we have grown to faciliate fornightly workshops for beginners and advanced Gaana dancers, as well as participating in two KCL Diwali shows. As a secretary, a lot of the work assigned to me is done before the event, so I usually try to make myself useful at the event by assisting the Events officers. Through this role, I have come to realise how to work as a team, in order to run events smoothly, and I hope to bring this forward when coming to work in the MSA.
