Candidate for the position of Law Council - Vice President: Law Families & Communities

Chester Tang

Hi guys! I appreciate the time and effort to read my manifesto despite being busy law students. Im Chester, a first year LLB law student and I'm hoping to change and innovate the law family project at KCL. I will be applying for the role of Vice President of the Law Council for law families and communities.

It is understandable that Law school can be a strenuos and difficult journey for all of us. Having worked intensely for your A levels or your International bacculaurates to finally enter your dream law school at King's College London, everyone deserves a group of friends or academic peers to navigate the complex topics and issues.

It is with that belief, that belonging to a community and having a law family to help you thorugh that process, would   make law school a much more happier place. I would like to have a hand in building such a community within the Dickson Poon school of law, and create a environment where people can reach out hand to hand with genuine intentions, and change the norm of transactional relationships.

Experience

- Marketing associate at King's venture capital

- Social Media manager at King's division 1 volleyball team

- Event organiser at sports platform startup

I am a well qualified candidate for this role, having held many leadership positions in my previous school as well as in my current year at King's College London. I am a marketing associate at King's Venture Capital as well as the social media manager at the King's Division 1 volleyball team. This has equipped me with the skills to be able to present a event as attractive, while providing clear communication to the audience regarding what it is all about. I am also a event organiser at a local sports platform start up which has developed my skills in liasing with venue owners for bookings, as well as general logistics involved in the process to ensure sustainability, participation and smooth running in the events.

1. More planned social events.

Being the batch of students where our high school lives were largely impacted by covid and restriction policies, I aim to fulfill the few years that we missed in our lives with extra fun, happiness and joy.

How would I do that?

More pub quizzes

With randomly allocated groups to ensure inclusivity, and less anglocentric.

Sports and fun game events.

As an avid athelte in sports, I believe teamwork and trust can be built between people in fun and engaging activities where people can let go of themselves in a healthy way.

Film nights

Where polls are released to invite people to vote on their favourite movies, with the top voted movie  screened for everyone to watch at a venue.

2. Study groups

Through the course of studying a LLB, there will be certain problems or legal theories that you will come across which may be challenging or complex. You may also prefer to study in a group to remove yourself from other distractions that you may have studying alone.

I would create weekly study groups for law students who want to come and discuss particular legal theories, to help build on each other's thoughts and ideas. They would also ideally be seperated within different year groups to ensure relevance in the topics, and coherent disucssions.

3. Law families

As a law child in the newly revived project Law families, it has been really helpful knowing someone qualified and genuine such as my law parent Vedant, has been there around the corner to help with any issues.

I would organise more casual law family events, as well as have a larger emphasis on teambuilding and icebreaking activities in the beginning of the year. This would help relieve some tension that one may have when asking for help from seniors, and create a genuine "family" like bond between the members.
