Leona Takeuchi

An academic FOMO-phobic

Hi, I’m Leona and hopefully I’ll also be your next secretary :)

This year I’ve thoroughly enjoyed broadening my knowledge of cardiovascular diseases and contributing to research projects on coronary artery analysis following this. One of the highlights of my academic year was attending the cardiology society annual conference where I created professional connections and learnt more about the profession from the experts in the field. Next year, I hope to be a part of the committee that has assembled such an impressive event, and inspire others who share my passions!

I have a track record of competent organisational skills where I organised a school-wide tutoring scheme, which involved booking rooms and organising time slots for the students and mentors involved. This year, I will translate these skills to this role and ensure that there aren’t any wandering or confused med students in New Hunts House, only aspiring cardiologists with a passionate heart and confidence that they know what room to get to and where : )

In a vast city such as London, social events and connecting with others are essential, both for self-growth and career progression. In the monthly newsletters, I aim to relay the essential information whilst incorporating extra-curricular opportunities to decrease the gap in knowledge people have about the career and events occurring so no one will experience the guilt of academic FOMO. I also understand that, before signing up for the membership, students may be unaware of what the newsletter contains, so I aim to incorporate more visual summaries of these that can be used as social media posts, to increase engagement and interest in the society membership.

As your secretary, I aim to:

  1. Ensure reminders are sent about the location and timings of events.
  2. Incorporate more visual summaries of the monthly newsletters to increase memberships and engagement.
  3. Bridge the gap in knowledge of extra-curricular events and opportunities by adding these to the newsletter.

It can be intimidating to be surrounded by so many intelligent people, so a sense of community is always important in a society. As the secretary, I also hope to be someone that society members feel they can come to for a general chat, or questions on research/med school etc. Embarrassingly, I’m always online so please feel free to ask any questions : )

TLDR; if you don’t want academic FOMO, don’t enjoy being lost on campus, or want a sense of community, vote for me!
