Candidate for the position of Nordic Society - Treasurer

Shriya Sharma

Hello Everyone!

My name is Shriya, and I am a second-year IR student currently on my year abroad in California. I grew up in Oslo, so when I joined KCL in my first year, the Nordic Society was a natural choice, although I had no clue what it actually entailed. It ended up being my favourite out of the other societies I had joined. I think what makes it relatively special is that there is no pretense of wanting to do anything other than have fun and build a community. For this reason, I think the society is pretty perfect as it is, and there are no "major" ideas I have to reform the society. Instead, what I have to offer is my experience with leadership roles in the past to assist with making the society function effectively and implementing new ideas that members may be interested in. For instance, in my first year, there were not as many Norwegians (which may have slightly changed this year from what I hear…?) and, as a result, we did not really celebrate any Norwegian festivals, which is something I would like to potentially introduce (17th May champagne breakfast anyone?). As we continue to host our classic events, such as the boat party and ABBA night, I am excited to hear fresh ideas for potential events and socials that we could organize. I am standing for either the vice-president or treasurer because these are the exact roles I have experience with previously, which I think could inform my time on the committee. All in all, my motivation is largely driven by the great memories I associate with the society and the belief that I can contribute valuably to the committee. I hope you vote for me, and either way, I look forward to meeting all of you who joined this year once I'm back in London!
