Candidate for the position of GKT Rugby (Men's) - Honorary Secretary

Jamie DUNBAR

Four years ago, I joined GHRFC and rediscovered my love for rugby. Unlike in school, where the rugby culture pushed me away, I found a place where I belong at Guy's. The environment at Guy's is something I am extremely proud of - it's a space where individuals can be themselves, and where everyone's input is valued, regardless of age or seniority. GHRFC is the biggest reason why I decided to stay on at King's after my last degree, and being Honorary Secretary of this club would be the greatest honour of all.

During my time here, I have been part of the 1st XV team, playing as fly-half. I've had to adapt my game to different personnel over the years, but being surrounded by like-minded individuals has helped me grow as a player. I've also represented the club for UHRFC, and this season I held the position of vice-captain with aspirations of captaining them next season.

As the 7s Captain, I ensured that rugby was still played during the Covid year and organised a 45-man trip to Bournemouth 7s. Taking on the role of vice-captain and captain in my second and third years, respectively, has taught me a great deal about leadership. I've learned that it can be smooth running and enjoyable when winning, but frustrating and difficult when losing. I've had to build resilience this season, while motivating the boys both on and off the pitch and remaining organised.

In my second year, I held the vice-captain and social Secretary role concurrently, which required me to manage my time effectively and ensure things were organised ahead of time. By being part of the committee for the last three years, I've learned how the club operates, and having worked closely with the Honorary Secretaries during that time, I've seen what it takes to do the job well: motivating others, staying organised, and representing the club well in a wider GKT sphere.

If elected, I would take everything I've learned in the last three years and apply it to the role of Honorary Secretary. By being in my third year of medicine, I will have the time to commit my time to the club both on and off the pitch. GHRFC means the world to me, and I would be so proud to serve as Honorary Secretary.
