Bridging the gap between medical students and radiology

Hey my name is Naji and I'm currently in my third year of medicine, going onto my fourth next year. I have a strong interest in radiology and I'm keen on applying this passion as president of the KCL Radiology Society.

As someone who has had to do a lot of independent research into a career in radiology and where to gain potential experience, I understand first-hand the difficulties that can be faced due to the underrepresentation of this specialty. Combining this with my leadership skills and past experiences in leadership roles, I believe I am a great fit for the position of president of the Radiology Society.

Radiology is not mentioned often in specialty discussions, particularly during medical school, despite its significance as a career and the necessity of imaging interpretation in all levels of our medical careers. Teaching on this is currently quite limited in comparison to other specialties, one thing which I hope to address in this role by campaigning for more radiology/imaging-focused teaching throughout our course.

By leading and hosting events throughout the year, I hope to engage students who may wish to pursue radiology or have an interest in what radiology entails. I hope to organise a variety of events ranging from teaching, social, OSCE practice, workshops, and other great opportunities such as how to get involved with research and audits. This will also include exploring how to actually get involved with radiology, and what the necessary steps are to successfully pursue a career in this field. These will be aimed at developing knowledge of clinical radiology and imaging interpretation to benefit our current studies, and providing valuable insight into this specialty to benefit our future careers.

Another thing I aim to achieve is liaising with consultant and trainee radiologists to organise informative events and provide more accessibility between medical students and radiologists, who we do not typically meet during our time on clinical placement. I also hope to liaise with radiologists who have an online social presence to join us at King's to share their experiences and journey from medical student to radiologist.

I will support KCL Radsoc in all aspects of the society and effectively communicate with the team to ensure the best for this society and it's members. I'm dedicated and outgoing, and always try my best to support others. I hope to be able to contribute my efforts as president of the Radiology society for students such as myself who wish to pursue, or want to learn more about, radiology. As a committee, we will create a supportive and enjoyable environment within KCL Radsoc for students with a similar interest in radiology to come together. I would really appreciate your vote, and with your support we can help bridge the gap between medical students and radiology.
