Candidate for the position of Strand Magazine - Gaming Editor

Karan Nimsons

Gaming: A flexible and universal language for communication in the digital age.

My name is Karan Nimsons, and I am hoping to be your Gaming Editor.

I am deeply passionate about the ways in which gaming can augment and change the way we communicate and interact with content. From both a narrative and hobbyist perspective, gaming offers many with limitless opportunities to immerse themselves with new realities and take a break from the difficulties and obstacles of daily life. As a relatively new writer that has been writing for the Gaming section since the beginning of this academic year, I am committed to furthering the professional and cultural goals of the magazine.

As an English Literature graduate, I have excellent skills in professional communication and editorial writing. Through my time as both a student and a Course Representative I have also demonstrated key skills in organization and leadership.

In particular, my time as a Course Representative allowed me to experience the power of effective communication. With my duties focusing primarily on liaising between senior staff and the student body, I believe that only by working to represent a spectrum of experiences can people break down barriers and engage with content effectively.

In relation to these aims, I have three key goals I’d like to enact if I am selected for the role:

  • Improve the variety of articles published within the section.
    • Currently, the gaming section is mostly focused on reviews and retrospective articles. I would like to suggest an increased focus in speculative and discussion-based articles prompting the magazine’s readers to think more critically about the social and cultural context behind the games that people play. (Such as games focusing on queer narratives or cultural struggles).
  • Host more meetings for the Gaming section.
    • In order to encourage more effective communication within the Gaming section, I will hold regular meetings on a weekly or bi-weekly basis in order for writers within the Gaming section to meet and discuss ideas and developments within the section.
  • Collaborate more freely with other sections across the magazine.
    • Gaming is a multi-faceted concept with a variety of applications. In many ways video games have become a global medium in recent years – and by interacting on a deeper level with Strand Magazine’s other sections such as Essays, Music and Food & Drink, the magazine will be able to better represent the varying ways in which gaming effects daily life and culture.

To conclude, I would love to be your Gaming Editor for the coming academic year. I am passionate about ensuring that video games are better understood and beloved by a variety of audiences.

Thank you for taking the time to read my manifesto.

Looking forward to the year ahead,

Karan Nimsons.
