Cutting Barriers, Stitching Collaboration - Empowering all in Surgical Innovation :)

Hello all, my name is Rachel Bautista, and I am a second-year medical student. I am standing to be elected as the Equality, Diversity, and Sustainability Officer as I am passionate about promoting initiatives that empower all members to thrive in pursuing their interests within surgical innovation!

My Promises To You :)

  1. Coordinate networking events free for members and advocate for the continuation of free/ low-cost events within the society to remove financial barriers so all members can access opportunities.

  2. Include external opportunities within the newsletter for surgical sustainability events.

  3. Build diverse perspectives and experiences within society events through collaborating with other societies e.g. Women in Surgery Society, Surgical Society.

  4. Encourage greener and more inclusive practices in society events e.g. plant-based meals provided in conferences/ events, digital avenues to register & sign in for events.

  5. Advertise educational opportunities to raise awareness of equality & diversity within the university.

  6. Establish a confidential form to allow students to share any concerns/ bring suggestions to improve the society.

I believe that these policies will positively impact the Surgical Innovation Society as members will feel welcomed and supported when engaging with all the opportunities the society has to offer.

My Experiences:

  • KCLSU Liberation Network Representative in 2022-23
  • Wilderness Medicine Society Events Officer in 2022-23
  • A decade's experience as an Ecological Representative for my local community (2011-2021).

This means that I have developed strong interpersonal and organisational skills, as well as an approachable nature, which makes me an ideal candidate for this role.

Whether it be advocating for equity or developing collaboration within our diverse community, I will continue to support your personal and academic development within the Surgical Innovation Society!

Thank you in advance for your consideration – Vote Rachel Bautista for Equality, Diversity and Sustainability Officer!
