Candidate for the position of Boat Club - Women's Captain

Flavie DERVILLE

I am applying to the Women’s Captain role as a progression of the role I have filled this year, helping maintain a successful women’s squad. I want to further invest my time in this sport and club which have truly shaped my time at Kings. Over the past two years, I have met so many lovely people in the club and appreciated the balance that rowing brings to academia. I have rowed for close to 8 years and spent the past year on committee, so believe that I could use my sporting and leadership experience to better the club and keep us competitive with the other universities and clubs along the tideway.

As Women’s Captain, I will use my breadth of rowing and leadership experiences to contribute to the team’s success. I have been a member of multiple clubs across the US, France, Belgium and the UK, experiencing distinct types of training, racing, and leadership. Using this, I believe I can provide helpful insights to aid the further development of the senior and fresher women’s squads.

This year has provided me with hands-on experience in aiding Jasmine in her decision making, day-to-day running of training, and liaising with members of the whole club, coaching, and alumni. I have gained a deep comprehension of the scope of the role, what has and has not worked, and the importance of dedication to the sport, and to the club. Additionally, outside of rowing, I have taken on multiple committee and captain-like positions which have helped me develop collaborative working skills, team-management abilities, and organisational skills that are essential to the role of women’s captain.

I have multiple goals I would like to achieve with the squad next year. Firstly, I intend to create a cohesive and united women’s squad via inclusive socials, adapted training, and an integration of the women’s shared and individual goals. I will also place a focus on strong recruitment at the start of the year. Along with a structured training plan for seniors and freshers alike, I believe this will help maintain the squads’ level of commitment, and aid in the progression of the squad throughout the season. With the arrival of the shared coxless four/quad, I would like to build sculling into the training programme to create a programme that plays to each members’ strengths, and allows for a friendly, cohesive, and competitive environment. Over the past few years, the women’s squad has seen exponential success, which I would like to see continue in my term as women’s captain.
