Christopher Trotter: Candidate for President of KCL Jazz Society
My name is Chris Trotter and I am a 2nd Year Undergraduate Music Student at King’s. I am a principal study Trombonist, currently playing as Principal Trombone in Big Band and the Symphony Orchestra (KCLSO), while I was a member of this year’s Jazz Society as the Musical Director of the Jazz Orchestra. I am vying for the office of President and I need your support.

WHY PRESIDENT?
This position is the most important within the society, responsible for the management of the society as a whole, organising rehearsals, jams and concerts, the management of the societies’ equipment and the upkeep of the numerous groups currently active within KCL Jazz Society. However, I believe the primary role of the President is the responsibility to safeguarding student welfare alongside the encouragement and promotion of diversity within on of the most naturally diverse societies at the University, and enuring the society is open to all.

WHY SHOULD YOU VOTE FOR ME?
I firmly believe that I have the requisite skills, knowledge and ability to function effectively as President if elected. I have been performing in Big Bands and Jazz ensembles for almost 10 years, in that time I have had experience performing at venues such as the Royal Albert Hall and Symphony Hall, Birmingham as well as Big Band tours abroad to Florida and Los Angeles, while also having spent time in 2019 on a Jazz Course at the University of Southern Florida led by Jeff Jarvis.

I believe that my successful direction of the Jazz Orchestra this year (which has resulted in a larger attendance with higher level of Repertoire performed) has proven that I can apply my skills into a practical settling. And if elected I will strive to replicate this success with the Big Band and the society as a whole.

I also believe that my plans for the society next year will allow for greater inclusivity for all students, no matter what instrument they play or their background inside and outside of music.

IF I AM ELECTED, I WILL:
• Increase the opportunities for those within the society to perform.

• Encourage diversity within the society and ensure that anyone and everyone can be part of Jazz Soc.

• Organise more concerts for the groups within the society, working with the social sec to create new and exciting themes alongside the current popular concert nights, e.g a Big Band movie night with fancy dress.

• Represent the Jazz Society, and in turn the University on a wider scale by entering groups in music competitions and festivals, while also looking to take paid work opportunities should they arrive.

• Install better organisation and preparation within groups.

• Open the society to all voices, so that students feel like they can have an input on how the society is run.

• Continue, and build on the tradition of inclusive and non-auditioning activities, such as the Jazz Jams and Jazz Orchestra/Chorus.

• Ensure that the Big Band, as the flagship group of the society is regularly performing to a high standard that reflects its’ position within the society.

• Consistently represent the views and interests of all students, and create an environment that promotes student wellbeing.

• Maintain the good health of the societies’ finances.

Please Vote Christopher Trotter for President of KCL Jazz Society.

Many thanks,
Christopher Trotter
