Candidate for the position of English Society - Careers Officer

Paris Singh

I’m Paris, a first-year English undergrad, and I’m running for the role of careers officer. Continuing the brilliant work of the current committee, I’m eager to support students interested in learning more about careers in English. The skills learnt in an English degree are adaptable to so many professions, so I also aim to make English students aware of other career routes too, such as marketing and law. As a senior member of my school’s English society and a member of the school council, I often led group discussions, and I hope to manage career-based discussions at King’s as part of this society. If elected, I will organise and oversee networking events and talks by graduates, predominantly journalists, authors, and publishers, continuing the efforts of the previous committee. I want to make networking accessible to everyone, especially socially mobile and ethnically diverse students, so events offered will be in formal and informal settings to make them less intimidating. I will arrange at least one in person career-focused event alongside webinars and online presentations throughout the year. It would be great to hear from alumni as well as current students and professors about their career journeys; I will make sure to include individuals at different stages of their careers in events. When planning these events and fulfilling my role as careers officer, my main focus is to cater to the interests of members of the society. I will be guided by their feedback in surveys which I will work with the rest of the committee to create. Overall, I’m looking forward to another year as a member of the society, and hopefully joining the committee!
