Struggling with housing?
King's accomodation has recently seen average rent hit a record high. Meanwhile, students are shut out of renting privately by landlords that need a guarantor - Or else expect you to pay 6 months of rent upfront!
If you're lost in the wild west of London housing, you're not alone! Students across the country have fought for better housing support and won - but only when they've been organised.
Come and meet others struggling with housing, share your experiences, and find out how you can get involved in making change through two different campaigns:
- Halls for All - King's Affordable Accomodation Scheme has remained stagnant since it was set up 10 years ago. In that time, the income threshold required to be eligible hasn't changed in spite of inflation, Brexit and wars driving up living costs. On top of that, it's never been open for postgrad students. It's time KAAS stopped locking people out that desperately need it.
- Guarantor Guarantee - In the private sector, landlords often demand that you have a guarantor - usually a UK-based property owner who can guarantee your rent to the landlord if you default. If you can't provide one, you might be expected to pay up to 6 months rent upfront. This injustice doesn't have to exist, as many universities act as a guarantor for students who need it, yet King's continues to let its' students be locked out of essential housing. KCL needs to step up or be left behind.
Remember, these campaigns are only as strong as the people that back them - So make your voice heard and get involved!
