The Sylheti Society is the first of its kind at King’s College London, dedicated to celebrating Sylheti as a language in its own right — not just a dialect of Bengali. Sylheti even has its own script, Sylheti Nagri!
Our mission is to build community, share heritage, and push for the wider recognition of Sylheti as a distinct classical language. We provide a space that is welcoming, fun, and open to all — whether you’re Sylheti or just curious to learn something new.
Bi-weekly Language Lessons – Learn to speak Sylheti in a friendly environment. Open to students from all universities, with free tea at every session!
Games Nights – Fun quizzes, trivia, and games.
Workshops – Creative sessions such as calligraphy and Nakshi Kantha-inspired art.
Food & Cultural Celebrations – Share Sylheti cuisine, explore traditions, and mark festivals.
Trips & Heritage Walks – Explore Sylheti history and diaspora stories in London, as well as fun trips like hikes.
Speaker Panels – Discussions with academics, community leaders, and cultural figures on migration, identity, and heritage.
