Christmas Caroling in London
Attending a carol service is a wonderful way to experience London’s festivities. If you are staying in the city over Christmas, whether as a local or an international student, these events provide a welcoming opportunity to connect with the season. With a variety of services ranging from traditional hymns to classical performances, there is something to suit all preferences.
For a heartwarming carol experience, head to All Souls, Langham Place, where live choirs and an orchestra perform some of the nation’s favourite carols. Taking place on December 12, 14, 15, 21, and 22, these services last about an hour. Not only do you get a dose of festive cheer, but also complimentary mince pies and Christmas punch afterwards! Here you will find performances by the King’s College Choir, as well as with conductor Jonathan Cohen and acclaimed singer Louise Dearman. There are plenty of Candlelit Choirs across the month, you can view these here.
Temple Church
This is a 5-minute walk from Bush House, Strand Campus. You can view their itinerary here, but you can expect services sung by the Temple Church Choir, others with the Temple singers. They have services leading up to Christmas, and on Christmas day if you are still around in London!
Bride’s Church – Fleet Street Carols
Don’t miss the Fleet Street Carols at St Bride’s Church, a highlight of the city’s festive calendar. Featuring St Bride’s Choir and the Onyx Brass quintet, services are held at 12 pm and 5 pm. Entry is free, but reservations are recommended to secure your spot. You can do this here.
St Helen’s Church hosts carol services every Tuesday throughout December and also have ongoing services into January, so if you are not in London for Christmas, you can still join in on the festive spirit!
Southbank Centre
For a lively singalong experience, head to the Southbank Centre, where you can join in with traditional carols and contemporary Christmas favourites. Highlights include performances by the London Philharmonic Choir on December 14 and the Philharmonia Orchestra and Chorus on December 15, conducted by Michael England. You can view the calendar here.
St Martin in the Fields
Trafalgar Square becomes especially festive thanks to its annual Christmas tree gifted by Norway, and its resident church, St Martin-in-the-Fields, is the perfect spot for evening concerts.
