As we are well into the the Easter Break, students (myself included!) are gearing up for exams and deadlines, each facing a unique set of circumstances. Some of us have returned home for the break, while others remain in London. Wherever you are, and however you are spending the holiday, we have some tips on how to prioritise your wellbeing over the break.
Adjusting to Home Life
Returning home can be a mixed bag. You may have found it difficult at Christmas, or welcomed being back with your family. We have spent months learning independence and creating our own routines at university, so it can be hard to adapt when going back home. Adjusting to the pace of home life, familial dynamics, and the absence of the university community you have grown to know can be both rewarding and challenging, It’s an opportunity to reconnect with loved ones and revisit familiar spaces, yet it may require a period of readjustment. Finding a balance between enjoying being back at home, and maintaining the independence gained at university is key. Try to take it in your stride and embrace these differences with an open mind. The most important thing here though is to communicate your needs, wherever you are. Good communication can help prevent any tension and support your wellbeing with a good environment.
Stay Connected
Although you may have friends and family from home, it can be hard to leave the friends you have made over term, even just temporarily. Conversely, if you have stayed in London whilst your friends have left to visit home, this can feel quite isolating. This is where social media comes in! Make sure to keep in touch with your friends over the break. You could schedule online study sessions, or regular calls to chat with your friends.
Remote University Support
University services are still a click away. Even if you aren’t on campus, you can utilise remote academic and wellbeing resources to stay connected with the support systems you rely on. Take a look at our wellbeing hub to see the support available to you.
Guard Against Burnout
With deadlines looming, be mindful of overworking. Allocate time for self-care to avoid burnout and maintain productivity. Take a look at our blog post here on looking after your wellbeing during exam season.
Cultivate Positivity
Embrace challenges with a positive mindset. Everyone navigates differently, so seek support when needed and celebrate small victories.
As you prepare for the academic challenges post-break, remember that your wellbeing is key to success. Whether you're at home or in London, these steps can help you strike a balance between academic preparation and personal care.
