Books With Transgender Characters

Starting Wednesday, 13 November 2024, KCLSU will launch a week of events in honour of Trans Awareness Week. In celebration, we’ve put together a list of books with transgender protagonists, offering you a chance to connect deeply with trans stories. Books provide a powerful way to experience diverse perspectives that can bridge gaps and inspire change. Whether you’re looking to see your story reflected or to gain insight into someone else’s, these books offer an engaging path forward.

Detransition, Baby by Torrey Peters

*Detransition, Baby* follows the lives of three people—both transgender and cisgender—as they navigate the complexities of relationships and parenthood. After Amy detransitions to become Ames, his relationship with Reese falls apart. However, when Ames’s new partner, Katrina, unexpectedly becomes pregnant, Ames sees a unique opportunity: perhaps he can offer Reese the chance at motherhood she's always dreamed of. This witty, bold, and deeply heartfelt novel tackles themes of womanhood, motherhood, gender, and sexuality in a refreshingly candid way.

Nevada by Imogen Binnie

*Nevada* is a cult favourite among transgender readers, celebrated for its raw and unapologetic portrayal of Maria, a punk-rock transgender woman who grapples with life on her own terms, outside of the conventional language of medical professionals and therapy. When Maria discovers her girlfriend’s infidelity, her life begins to unravel, leading her on a journey of self-discovery. Newly single, jobless, and working through past trauma, Maria's story sheds light on the less-discussed challenges of trans life, told with sharp insight and authenticity.

Little Fish by Casey Plett

Casey Plett’s debut novel, *Little Fish*, is an award-winning work that centres on Wendy Reimer, a 30-year-old transgender woman who uncovers hints that her late grandfather might also have been transgender. As Wendy wrestles with this revelation, she is also dealing with personal challenges involving her friends, exploring the intersections of family history, gender identity, and community. Alongside Wendy’s journey of discovery, the novel confronts difficult subjects like alcoholism, sex work, and socioeconomic struggles, brought to life through Plett’s skilful characterisation and authentic dialogue.

Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas

Aiden Thomas, a queer, trans author, introduces us to a vibrant blend of Latinx culture and paranormal fantasy in *Cemetery Boys*. The story follows Yadriel, a gay, trans-Latinx boy who, after being denied acceptance by his family, performs a ritual to prove his true gender. In the process, he accidentally summons the ghost of Julian Diaz, a former classmate with unfinished business. Together, Yadriel and Julian embark on an adventure full of mystery, humour, and heart, making this a uniquely moving story of identity and love.

Euphoria Kids by Alison Evans

In this enchanting contemporary fantasy by non-binary author Alison Evans, we meet three queer friends: Iris, a non-binary character who sprouted from a seed; Babs, who was cursed by a witch and sometimes becomes invisible; and a young trans boy who has yet to discover his true name. Together, they explore magic, face challenges at school, and uncover hidden worlds. This story celebrates friendship and self-discovery beautifully, affirming queerness in all its magical forms.
