Womxn in Dentistry x KCL Women in Medicine
Throughout Student Volunteering Week, we’re spotlighting the impact of student-led volunteering projects and celebrating the students who make them happen, sharing their achievements, stories, and the difference they make within our communities.
School to Scrubs is an annually run, student-led widening participation project delivered by Womxn in Dentistry in collaboration with KCL Women in Medicine. In November 2025, the conference returned to Guy’s Campus to support aspiring Medicine and Dentistry applicants from widening participation backgrounds.
The one-day event focused on Year 12 and 13 students, particularly those from non-selective state schools and underrepresented backgrounds who often have limited access to tailored admissions support.
Reach and impact
- Around 100 students attended the conference
- 50 students took part in afternoon hands-on workshops
- 20–30 student volunteers supported delivery across the day
The programme combined expert talks, student Q&As, and practical workshops including MMI interview practice, suturing, and medical ethics. Students gained clear, practical insight into the application process, alongside a realistic understanding of life at King’s and future healthcare careers.
What participants said
Feedback highlighted increased confidence, clarity, and motivation:
- “The MMI workshop was the most useful part of the event as I got really useful feedback, and I liked the talks as it inspired me so much more to pursue my chosen career.”
- “Suturing workshop – very fun and insightful.”
- “The dentistry talk was the most useful as I wouldn’t have considered dentistry as a career without this.”
100% of students were satisfied, with 86% very satisfied, and all attendees said they would recommend the event.
Volunteer experience
Volunteers reflected positively on the opportunity to give back:
- “It was very fun to do the interviews and help people who were in the same position as me years ago.”
- “The students were very eager and curious, which was refreshing. I felt like I was able to give back to the community.”
Collaboration and delivery
The project was delivered through strong cross-society collaboration between Womxn in Dentistry and KCL Women in Medicine, with support from external partners Haleon and MDDUS, who provided materials and resources. Promotion on Instagram reached 7,800+ views, with higher-than-usual engagement.
Running a full-day conference with multiple workshops required careful coordination, volunteer management, and clear communication. The team’s continued commitment to delivering School to Scrubs each year reflects the high standard of planning, leadership, and care they bring to widening participation work.
