Welcome to Disability History Month 2024! This is a core event for us at KCLSU, and we hope that you will join our community of students and staff in celebrating this important occurrence. But, before you go check out our events for this month, we want to keep you updated on the resources and student services that are available to you!
This year’s theme is specifically focussed on disability livelihood and employment, and KCLSU wants to echo this important issue by pointing you to the right places to ask for support and get involved while you are at University, to make the most of your student experience and feel welcome at KCLSU.
Ask for support
To discuss the challenges of being a disabled student, and receive the support you need to thrive at university, we suggest reaching out to:
This is a great service to voice your concerns and ask for help with any issues you may encounter during your studies. KCLSU Advice will offer you academic guidance through free and confidential consultations. You can reach out to them for multiple circumstances, from making an appeal to requesting a coursework extension. You can find their contact information on their website, and you can talk to them via online form, telephone or in person.
Are you in need of a wellbeing recharge? KCLSU’s Wellbeing Hub is the perfect place to look! The Hub offers several events, workshops, and general resources on enhancing positivity, mindfulness practices, and so much more. The Hub also points you to several other resources if you need extra help, such as TogetherAll (a 24-hour online support service for mental health) and other related King’s resources.
As a member of KCLSU, your needs are always a priority for your representatives. Student Officers are only an email away – they will be glad to listen to your requests and consider them for their campaigns during their tenure. You can reach out to the VP of Welfare & Community through her email, and to other representatives through the link above!
Get Involved
If you’d like to amplify your voice and connect with like-minded individuals and students around KCLSU (and beyond!), we recommend:
To meet with other students and discuss your experience at King’s, we recommend checking out our list of activity groups. Amongst the many, we want to flag out the Disabled Student Society: they hold regular events that seek to empower your voice and highlight your experiences as a member of KCLSU.
To contribute to a campaign for equal opportunities within the University, you can refer to Adjust KCL. They have been constantly advocating for the issues of vulnerable students, and keeping the University accountable through students’ individual stories and experiences. Your participation and endorsement of the campaign are bound to make a difference!
As a student, you can speak directly about the issues that affect you and, at large, all disabled students within Higher Education. Your voice will be extremely valuable for Disabled Students UK, a community research group changing policies around disability in universities all around the country. Find out more about joining their newsletter, attending events, and getting involved with DSUK on their website.
We hope this list was comprehensive and helpful towards your journey as a student in KCLSU. To find out about gatherings for Disability History Month, or Quiet Zones to take a moment for yourself, check out KCLSU’s dedicated page with all our events!
