Project of the Month – LGBTQ+ Network – Winter Café

This month’s Project of the Month goes to the KCLSU LGBTQ+ Network for their Winter Café, a thoughtful and much-needed initiative supporting students during the winter break.

Created to address a gap in community support while the university was closed, the Winter Café provided a warm, welcoming space with free hot drinks, blankets, hand warmers, and craft activities.

Inspired by the former Global Lounge and informed by research highlighting increased loneliness, financial pressure, and wellbeing challenges during winter, the Network stepped in to create a space centred on care, connection, and belonging.

Entirely organised from scratch by the LGBTQ+ Network, the Winter Café has already supported over 80 students, offering a place to warm up, meet others, and feel at home during a difficult time of year. The project has been widely praised by students and staff alike, recognising the dedication of co-chair Ali and the Network for holding space for their community and for everyone who calls King’s home.

Congratulations to the KCLSU LGBTQ+ Network on winning Project of the Month!

Volunteer of the Month – Matthias Loong (Cybersecurity Society)

This month’s Volunteer of the Month is Matthias Loong, President of the Cybersecurity Society, for his exceptional leadership, dedication, and impact.

Matthias has independently designed and delivered a series of weekly hands-on cybersecurity workshops, teaching students from all academic disciplines and skill levels. From complete beginners to experienced participants, he has made complex and technical content accessible, engaging, and supportive, helping to break down barriers in a field that can often feel intimidating.

Beyond teaching, Matthias has fostered a genuinely inclusive environment, encouraging students with no prior technical background to get involved and build confidence. His work has significantly increased participation and sustained engagement within the Society.

He has also strengthened King’s presence within the wider cybersecurity community by organising collaborations with other universities, including UCL and Imperial, and building relationships with industry partners to support sponsorship and external opportunities. Much of this work has been carried out independently and alongside academic commitments, demonstrating a level of commitment well beyond expectations.

Matthias’ contribution has had a lasting impact on skills development, inclusion, and the growth of the Cybersecurity Society.

Congratulations to Matthias on winning Volunteer of the Month!
