Hello, I'm Mehak, a second-year Economics student from India.
My journey at KCLSU has been nothing short of extraordinary. When I received my acceptance letter on my 17th birthday, a mix of excitement and nervousness coursed through my veins as I prepared to embark on a new adventure in a foreign land. Little did I know that KCLSU would become my home away from home — a place where I found my tribe with whom I shared my dreams and forged lifelong connections. While exploring KCLSU societies on Instagram, I discovered the captivating world of the KCL Women in Business Society. Their vibrant pink branding and the motto "empowered women empower women" instantly drew me in. Inspired by my twin sister and mom, I was determined to surround myself with like-minded, driven women, and KCL Women in Business Society felt like the perfect fit to make that happen.
To understand society better, I engaged with it virtually — participating in Instagram giveaways, attending its virtual orientation event, and visiting it during Welcome Week. The connection was instant because the committee was super welcoming, and I knew this was where I belonged. Finally, I hurriedly applied for the Events Associate position when applications opened in September—and was accepted! Throughout my first year, I had the honour of organising events alongside my incredible team—Kashish, Shreya, Samriddhi, Atina, and Fabiana. Our campus meetings were a delightful whirlwind of brainstorming, planning, and laughter. From hosting a Women in Tech panel to throwing a Galentine's Day social, we left no stone unturned in creating unforgettable experiences for our members. And how could I forget our beloved committee brunches! Every two weeks, we indulged in meals at wonderful spots around Central London, savouring both the food and the warm company. These brunches became a respite from the demanding university life and a remedy for my homesickness.
Organising industry panels, networking sessions, and skill workshops as a member of the society introduced me to inspiring women who shattered glass ceilings in their respective fields — including finance, technology and consulting. Their unwavering confidence and boundless determination served as a wellspring of motivation. Moreover, KCL WIB opened doors to unimaginable opportunities. I found myself standing in multinational corporations like EY, Bloomberg, and Accuracy — a feat that the 17-year-old version of myself who reluctantly peeped at her UCAS decision could have only dreamt of. But being an Events Associate led to more than just professional growth. Every week, familiar faces would attend our events, eager to learn and connect. Knowing I was contributing to the King's community and fostering meaningful connections between female students and professionals in their desired fields was humbling. I felt an overwhelming sense of purpose, knowing I was part of a collective effort to generate real change.
Reflecting on my time at KCLSU, I'm filled with gratitude for the experiences, friendships, and personal growth it has bestowed upon me. So, to my beloved Women in Business Society, thank you for giving me a home away from home.
