Group of the Month – KCL Cardiothoracic Surgery Society

The KCL Cardiothoracic Surgery Society has delivered an extraordinary achievement this month by hosting one of the largest student-led academic events King’s has seen: the Cardiothoracic Research Hackathon. Bringing together more than 120 students from across all years, the event reimagined the traditional Hackathon format for medical research, creating a collaborative and innovative space rarely seen in the field.
The Hackathon gave students a unique platform to develop original research projects in just one day, helping many feel included, supported, and encouraged to showcase their ideas. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with participants saying it was the first time they felt truly seen and valued. The Society is now connecting standout projects with leading researchers to help students take their work even further.
Alongside this flagship event, the committee continued to provide portfolio guidance, academic talks, and mentoring sessions for younger students, all aimed at building confidence and fostering an inclusive community.
Congratulations to the KCL Cardiothoracic Surgery Society on winning Group of the Month!
Project of the Month – MedTech Pitch Night

The MedTech Pitch Night was an inspiring evening designed to help students develop innovative ideas that could improve healthcare. Ten students pitched their concepts in a supportive environment, receiving personalised feedback from MedTech investor Amardeep Parmar. For many, it was their first ever pitch, including one student who signed up part-way through the evening and delivered a spontaneous, standout presentation.
Ideas ranged from an AI sign-language translation tool to a virtual character that helps child patients understand their conditions. Around 50 students attended to watch, network, and collaborate, with several forming project teams during the event. Thanks to the Society’s efforts, the six winning pitches earned fully-funded places at the MedTech Summit in Copenhagen, where students will continue developing their ideas with industry professionals.
This project showcases the creativity, confidence, and ambition of King’s students, turning early-stage ideas into meaningful opportunities.
Congratulations to the MedTech Society on winning Project of the Month!
Volunteer of the Month – Emma Lin, KCL Vocaloid Society

This month’s Volunteer of the Month is Emma Lin, President of the KCL Vocaloid Society, recognised for their exceptional leadership and contributions to the London Anime Union (LAU).
Emma has acted as the key bridge between the Vocaloid Society and anime-related societies across London, helping reinvigorate the LAU after a period of inactivity. Their standout achievement was organising the LAU Halloween Party, a 200-person event held in the Great Hall on Strand Campus. They managed everything from coordinating with multiple society partners to booking the venue and overseeing the full event setup.
The Halloween Party featured a quiz, cosplay competition, catwalk, and photobooth, and played a major role in revitalising connections between student groups. Emma's dedication has strengthened both their own society and the wider anime community across London.
Congratulations to Emma on winning Volunteer of the Month!
