Group of the Month – KCL Disabled Students Society

The KCL Disabled Students' Society has undergone a remarkable transformation this month, completely rebranding and reviving a once-inactive group. Despite starting almost from scratch and with only three committee members, all of whom face their own challenges related to disability, the team has shown immense resilience and dedication to building a safe and inclusive community for disabled students at King’s.

They organised a vibrant and welcoming stall at the Welcome Fair, investing their own funds to ensure a strong presence, complete with new branding, banners, leaflets, and engaging activities. Their efforts paid off, resulting in over 20 new volunteers and 30 new members, and a much stronger foundation for the year ahead.

For the first time, the Society introduced a solidarity membership for £1 while keeping standard membership free, ensuring accessibility for everyone. They also opened committee and membership roles to both disabled and non-disabled students, building a more inclusive network of support and advocacy.

The society’s re-emergence represents not only determination but also the importance of community and visibility. Their work highlights the need for continued awareness and support for disabled students at King’s.

Congratulations to the KCL Disabled Students' Society on winning Group of the Month!

Project of the Month – KCL Polo Taster Session

The King’s College London Polo Club hosted a sold-out Welcome Event Polo Taster Session, introducing students to the sport of polo in an inclusive and accessible way.

With support from Welcome Event funding, the Club provided subsidised coaching, equipment, and transport, ensuring participants from all backgrounds and experience levels, including complete beginners, alumni, and even students from other universities, could take part.

Under the guidance of professional coaches, attendees learned polo techniques on the ground before meeting the ponies and practicing stick-and-ball exercises at walking pace. For many, it was their first time ever sitting on a horse, yet they were able to experience a taste of this unique sport in a safe and supportive setting.

The event received overwhelmingly positive feedback:

“A day to never forget, truly one of the best organised and fun events out there.” – Laya, KCL Equestrian Society

“Cheers for organising this lovely event, it was truly unforgettable.” – Maxim, Polo Taster participant

This project perfectly embodied the Club’s mission to widen participation in an otherwise exclusive sport, showing that with the right approach, polo can be open to everyone.

Congratulations to KCL Polo Club on winning Project of the Month!

Volunteer of the Month – Lucy Haye (KCL Women’s Rugby)

This month’s Volunteer of the Month goes to Lucy Haye, President of KCL Women’s Rugby, for her exceptional leadership and dedication to rebuilding and strengthening her club.

Taking on one of the most demanding student leadership roles, Lucy faced the challenge of starting the new academic year with fewer than 12 returning members, not even a full team. Undeterred, she has worked tirelessly to recruit new members, support her committee, and secure new female coaches in a sport that remains largely male-dominated.

Over the summer, Lucy organised open day attendance and coordinated the club’s Welcome Fair stall with professionalism and energy, ensuring strong outreach and recruitment. She also built a partnership with Wasps RFC, giving KCL players access to elite-level coaching and game time beyond the university.

Lucy’s positivity, persistence, and commitment have been instrumental in keeping the club alive and thriving. Her efforts have inspired both her teammates and fellow committee members, proving that with the right attitude and leadership, even the toughest challenges can be turned into success.

Congratulations to Lucy on winning Volunteer of the Month!
