Officer Statement: Student Safety and Support

As your elected Officers, our foremost concern is for the safety and wellbeing of all our members. We are aware of the ongoing media attention surrounding a case involving a member of our student community. While we are unable to comment on individual circumstances, we recognise the significant concern and distress this situation has caused across the student body.

We want to affirm that the wellbeing and safety of every student must remain the University’s highest priority, particularly where there are significant risks to personal safety or to their ability to continue their education. It is essential that all university processes are underpinned by fairness, natural justice and compassion - values that ensure students are supported, especially in times of vulnerability.

We also acknowledge the emotional impact this situation and its media coverage are having on our wider community. Many students have expressed fear and anxiety about what this means for their right to engage in lawful protest and exercise freedom of speech, including pro-Palestine activism. We especially acknowledge the fear and uncertainty that is being felt by many of our international students, who make up a significant part of our community. We want to reassure students that your voices are being heard and that we are in ongoing dialogue with the university to raise your concerns.

We encourage all students to familiarise yourselves with King’s Procedures for events, protests and open space gatherings so you feel confident in knowing how to exercise your rights and express your views in line with university guidelines.

We will continue to advocate for open communication, and the creation of a campus environment where all students feel safe, respected, and able to express themselves without fear.

If you are feeling affected in any way and need support, please reach out to the following services that KCLSU and the University have to offer.

Signed,
