University
In the coming weeks you should be hearing from the university about your course registration, modules and everything needed to help get you set up and ready to start in September. You can also visit the New Students Page for more information. If you are unsure of anything, you can always get in touch with the university for assistance.
Finances
Make sure you’ve got your finances sorted to help you pay tuition fees, rent and any other bills, as well as additional money for fun things and events you’ll be going to in Welcome Week! Take a look at Save the Student for advice on your Student Finance application, as well as further money advice. King’s have a Money and Housing Advice Team, as well as a group of students Money Mentors, who you can also reach out to for support.
Housing
Hopefully by now you have arranged a place to live, be if halls or private rental. If not, you can get in touch with the Money and Housing Advice Team for assistance. You’ll need to plan logistics of moving in terms of how you are getting to your accommodation, and who is coming with you.
Preparing for your course
A great way to start is to spend some of your long summer reading up on the required reading list before you start term. Reading at university is different from what you might be used to, so it is a good idea to ease into it and also help to free up some of your time in the first weeks of class to socialise with others. Even if you don’t feel in the headspace to get started properly, just a few chapters will help you gradually get used to reading again before September comes.
Get to know London!
Over the coming weeks we will be releasing a whole host of information on living in and getting to know London as a student. Make sure you keep your eyes peeled, and for now Youtube is a great way to hear about what students in London think about studying and living here!
Meeting people before you get there
Making new friends can be one of the hardest but most rewarding parts of starting uni. You can get a head start on making those connections with fellow students before the term begins! Freshers Facebook groups are a great place to start building friendships and connecting with future course mates, people in your year, and exchanging tips and advice during the first weeks of uni.
There's also probably one for student halls, so you can see who you're living with early – great to avoid every single one of you turning up with a toaster but no kettle. Groups for your course, events, and freshers' pages will all keep you up to date with everything that's going on and you'll never feel out of the loop.
Top tip – You can also join society groups and pages online to get a head start on what events will be happening. Some societies that are linked to their academic subject (e.g. Philosophy Society) will even have second years selling their books second hand on there for cheap!
Get packing!
Lucky for you, we have a comprehensive packing guide to help you in your preparations for moving. You can find more details here.
Top tip – you don’t need to bring everything with you from home, especially if you’re travelling from far away. You can buy most things in London – for example, a lot of larger supermarkets like Sainsbury’s and ASDA will sell cooking utensils, or M&S and even Poundland (where everything is £1!) sell soft furnishings. If you need anything larger, we have two IKEAs, one in Greenwich and the other in Wembley.
Spend time with your family and friends
While you’re still home, make sure you spend some quality time with your loved ones, especially if you have to travel far to come to King’s, you might end up missing them more than you think!
Finally...
All of this culminates in Welcome Week, a coming together of students and all that King’s and KCLSU has to offer! You can visit the website here to find out more, and plan how you want to get involved.
