A new campaign is launching next week, which aims to encourage more women and those that self identify as women to run for part of KCLSU's elected positions. You can find out more about what is involved in being an officer or taking up an elected role at one of our workshops coming up. 

The Launch event is on Tuesday 22 January, from 6pm in Bush House, South Wing, Room 2.03 - come along and hear from KCLSU and NUS women leaders, past and present, about their experiences and tips for student politics and beyond.

Jessica Oshodin, KCLSU's VP PG Officer, who is leading the campaign, said: ‘I wanted to bring it to King’s after hearing about the campaign at Sheffield University Student Union during the summer. As a result of Sheffield’s campaign, the student body elected their second female president in 20 years and their first all women sabbatical  team.  I did some further research and found that

• The average number of women on the student officer team over the last 6 years has been just 28%
• Only 8 out of 22 presidential candidates since 2014 have been women, and 6 of those were in 2017
• There have only been 3 female presidents of KCLSU since 2000, and just 4 since 1988
• There were no women candidates for KCLSU President in the Spring 2018 elections

Considering that women make up 62% of the student body these figures highlight that women are disproportionately represented in leadership positions at our union.  We acknowledge that there are multiple reasons for this so we wanted to take a proactive and practical approach to addressing this by launching this campaign. We hope the campaign aims to inspire and encourage woman to run in the elections particularly for sabbatical positions. ’
