Student Volunteering Week: Day 4 Highlights

svw

Day four of Student Volunteering Week brought together creativity, wellbeing, and meaningful conversations about access and opportunity. Through hands-on activities and thought-provoking discussion, students explored how volunteering can support both personal growth and wider social impact.

Upcycling for Good

Students were invited to bring along items ready for a new lease of life at our upcycling session. It was a creative space focused on reimagining your things and breathing new life into them. Delivered in collaboration with Time Out Hubs, the event also centered wellbeing, offering a relaxed and supportive environment where participants could slow down, connect with others, and explore creativity as a form of self-care. The session reflected the value of combining sustainability, creativity, and community, and we are grateful to the wellbeing team for welcoming us into their weekly programme.

Brains, Barriers and Pathways: Neurotechnology Society

KCL Neurotechnology Society hosted an inspiring event exploring educational inequality and how students can take action through volunteering. The session introduced the society’s outreach campaign, which will work with local state schools to widen access to help young people make informed decisions about higher education and STEM careers.

The event opened with an overview of the society’s mission and the broader educational landscape in the UK, highlighting how socioeconomic background can continue to influence educational pathways. A diverse student panel then shared personal experiences of navigating barriers to higher education, sparking honest and insightful reflections. The discussion expanded to include the wider audience, creating a collaborative space for meaningful dialogue around equity, access, and the power of student-led initiatives to drive change.
