As well as Sexual Health and Guidance (SHAG) Week, the 5 February marks the beginning of Sexual Abuse and Sexual Violence Awareness Week. This week, and every week it is important to address the issue of sexual misconduct and provide support for those who may have experienced it. Remember you are not alone, and there are resources available to help you navigate such difficult situations.

Understanding Sexual Misconduct

Sexual misconduct encompasses a range of behaviours, including harassment, rape, assault and any unwanted sexual advances. It is never okay, and it is not your fault. Everyone had the right to feel safe, respected, and in control of their own body. Sexual misconduct can take many forms. You can read about busting the myths surrounding sexual misconduct here

Where to go for support

If someone forces you to do something sexual that you do not want to do, it may help to speak to someone you trust to get help and support.

KCL Information and Services:

Report + Support is a platform for reporting incidents of harassment, discrimination or sexual misconduct anonymously, if you choose. It also provides access to support resources tailored to your needs.

KCL Counselling offers confidential and supportive services for students. If you’re seeking professional guidance to cope with the emotional impact of sexual misconduct, consider reaching out to KCL Counselling.

KCLSU Advice can help by providing free, confidential and impartial information on your rights within the university. If you were assaulted by another member of the College community (i.e. a staff member or a student), one of our Caseworkers can meet with you and discuss your options such as making an informal or a formal complaint including reporting via Report + Support. If your academic work has been affected, a KCLSU Advice Caseworker can also support you to submit Mitigating Circumstances for any upcoming assessments, or a Stage One Appeal for any assessments which have passed and for which you’ve been given the result. To get in touch, please use our online form: Advice Online Form (kclsu.org)

Respecting Personal Choices

It is important to recognise that survivors of sexual misconduct may choose not to report the incident. Reporting is a personal decision, and individuals should feel empowered to choose the path that aligns with their wellbeing. Some may prioritise recovery through other means, and this is completely okay. There should never be any pressure to report, and those who have experienced sexual misconduct should be supported in making decisions that prioritise their wellbeing, whether that involves engaging with counselling services, seeking medical assistance, or taking time for self-care.
