The team behind the ‘Not every disability is visible’ campaign have secured a huge victory after signs on bathroom doors in Bush House have been changed to include the ‘Not all disabilities are visible’ sign.

Zain, the campaigns officer said; ‘I’d like to say a huge sincere thank you to all those who contributed! Ultimately this is a cause that everyone could get behind as it will hopefully benefit many members of the university, which is why I feel we received the tremendous support that we did. We worked with multiple KCL departments and societies such as the Student Union, Diversity and Inclusion department, Disability Awareness Society and Crohn's and Colitis UK who are external to Kings, to garner further backing, and our terrific student officers Momin and Georgie, who served as campaign co-leads, enabled us to progress as smoothly and quickly as possible. 

‘I started the invisible disabilities signage campaign primarily to raise awareness about and de-stigmatise invisible disabilities. Being diagnosed with a chronic condition in 2015, as well  as having friends with hidden illnesses, there have been moments in our lives where we’ve been told that we don’t ‘look’ a certain way to be considered ill/disabled and in need of accessible facilities.’

‘In the future, we are looking to expand beyond the awareness and de-stigmatisation aspect of the signs. Including links or QR codes with the signs to direct students to welfare services at the university such as Disability, Counselling or Wellbeing would be fantastic. Furthermore, improving the awareness and information of where the accessible toilets can be found at each campus would be a great resource for many people, especially those newly joining King’s, so watch this space!’.
