KCLSU’s Buddy Scheme is back for the 2020/21 academic year, and applications are open to become a mentor!

The Buddy Scheme was set up by KCLSU to support incoming students from typically underrepresented backgrounds at university that may find it more difficult to settle in. Such as students with care experience (such as being from a foster family or foster care), and students estranged from their families. The Buddy Scheme pairs up these students (known as mentees) with older year students (known as mentors) who will guide and support them in their first year. For example, by answering questions about starting at King’s and signposting SU services to them. As Yousef, a 2018 Buddy Scheme Participant, told us:

“Bridging the gap between school and university was difficult for me and I certainly know it can be for others. Being a buddy to joining students allows you as a current student, to offer invaluable advice (which I wish I had!) to those who are just getting started.”

Applications are currently open: KCLSU is looking for second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth year undergraduate students to volunteer becoming mentors. This is not only a great way to help incoming students and give back to the student community, but is also a fantastic way to gain extremely valuable transferrable skills. As part of being a Mentor, you’ll undergo in depth training on working as part of a Widening Participation Scheme, on safeguarding, as well as accredited and nationally recognized Student Minds ‘Look After Your Mate’ training.

At the core of the Buddy Scheme though is the experience of helping a fellow student as they begin their university experience. The SU aims to pair each mentee and mentor up based on common interests, experiences and course where possible - and as you will meet regularly and attend socially distanced and virtual events together within the scheme, it’s a great way to make lasting friends too. As Finsu, a 2018 Buddy Scheme Participant put:

“The scheme was a wonderful way to connect with fellow peers and students at King’s, helping to create lifetime friendships!”
