Fundraising plays an important role in helping student groups and volunteers turn ideas into action. Across King’s, students regularly raise money to support charities, fund society activities and bring people together around causes they care about. Having clear procedures in place helps make sure that fundraising is fair and set up for success from the start.
As part of Student Volunteering Week, we’re sharing our guide to help students feel confident getting started with their own fundraising ideas.
Getting Started
Before planning any fundraising activity, students can look at the fundraising guidance we have available. This outlines procedures and timelines to help you understand what is required before a fundraiser can go ahead. Once your idea is ready submit your fundraising form, risk assessment and charity authorisation letter (if fundraising for a charity) and we’ll approve your fundraiser.
Ways to Fundraise
Fundraising at King’s takes many forms. Some societies raise money through merchandise sales, such as Islamic Society selling hoodies and tote bags via their SU page to raise funds for One Ummah. Others focus on performance and participation, like KCL Women’s Rugby Lip Sync Battle in aid of CoppaFeel, which brought together students from across the university for an evening of fundraising and raising awareness of breast cancer. KCL Fencing’s 24-hour charity marathon, livestreamed on Twitch in partnership with Right To Play UK, combined sport and digital engagement, whilst PASS organised a fashion show using donated clothing to highlight the impact of fast fashion. Fundraising can also support society development, as seen in KCL Cheerleading’s “Battle of the Best” event, where ticket sales were used to cover venue hire and reinvest in future activities.
KCLSU Support
KCLSU is here to support students throughout the fundraising process, from early ideas to final approval. By following the procedures and making use of the guidance available, students can focus on what matters most: creating meaningful opportunities to support their communities and make a real impact.
